What is global education and competence and why do our students need it?
The need for global education: A key text on educating youth for global competence, "Preparing Our Youth to Engage the World," by the Asia Society and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) best explains why students MUST be prepared to successfully negotiate an international environment. Globalization has altered the work environment, our digital revolution is international, migration is a global phenomena, and climate instability, and environmental stewardship can only be tackled globally.
Teaching global competence: Educators can help guide students to global competence by focusing on four areas: 1) Investigate the world beyond their own, 2) Recognize their own perspective and the perspective of others, 3) Effectively communicate their ideas, 4) Translate their ideas into action. More detailed information on these competencies can be found on the Asia Society website. |
